The Extropian ecosystem is available under four license tiers — and worked with in three ways: licensed as-is, customized, or built on as a foundation.
Licenses
Every product is available under one or more tiers, from fully open to internal-use-only proprietary. Licensing is negotiated around the software, deployment model, scope, and ownership requirements of each project.
How it works: the source is public and free to use, modify, and distribute — including in commercial products — with attribution. No license agreement required.
Typical cost: no cost.
How it works: a license agreement grants access to the source with permission to build on it internally — restricted only from offering it as a competing product or service. The choice when you want the code and the protection that keeps the ecosystem viable.
Typical cost: one-time license fee scaled to organization size and scope — no royalties, no recurring fees.
How it works: a license agreement covers use and distribution of the software in binary form — including inside products you sell. You get the capability without the source.
Typical cost: one-time license fee per product and deployment — no royalties, no recurring fees.
How it works: a license agreement covers internal use of the software as delivered — no distribution, no source access. The simplest option when only your team uses it.
Typical cost: one-time license fee per product — typically the most economical tier; no recurring fees.
My preferred model is a perpetual license per major version: one fee licenses the version you chose, for as long as you use it — including maintenance updates within that major version. New major versions are licensed separately, only if and when you want them. No subscriptions, no forced upgrades.
